Volunteering brings me just as much joy as creating healthy smiles for my patients. Making a difference in the lives of others – in my office and outside of it – is what keeps me grounded, inspired, and fulfilled each and every day.
For almost a year, I’ve put my skills and talent to good use at the Lake Area Free Dental Clinic in Oconomowoc, WI. It’s a place where Waukesha County residents – individuals and families – go for free surgery and emergency dental procedures. Unfortunately, there are thousands of low-income adults who can’t afford to go to the dentist for necessary treatments.
Many of these patients haven’t seen a dentist in a very long time … so it’s tough to hear their stories and learn about the hardships they’ve endured because of dental neglect. But by pitching in, I know that I’m giving them a priceless gift – a healthy new smile!
Also … I just started volunteering for Feed My Starving Children – a worldwide, privately-funded hunger relief organization. One day, my wife, Kara, and daughter, Audra, joined me and our church members at Oakwood in Delafield to assemble 20,000 meals for malnourished children. Then, all of it was loaded onto wooden pallets and placed into a shipping container. Staff pray over the meals before they go on their way.
I chose to get involved with this group because Christ has taught me the joy of giving to others – and I plan on continuing to give back this way. Just thinking about the smiles on those kids’ face, imagining them cheering and dancing happily as their food arrives … I wouldn’t have it any other way.
If you can find some free time in your schedule, I encourage you to get involved with a cause that’s important to you. Even if it’s only a few minutes per week, month, or year … it will be the greatest gift you can give!
