For those of you who have ever had a root canal, you’re probably familiar with a crown. You might also know what an important role it has to play in protecting your tooth.
If not … keep reading this blog to learn more about this protective cover!
What is it? A crown is a fixed prosthetic device. That simply means it’s something you don’t remove – and only your dental professionals at Blake Family Dentistry can install it. Not only does it strengthen a damaged tooth, but it can also refine its shape, alignment, and … you guessed it, appearance! They are made of gold, porcelain, or a special plastic material. What’s really great is they can be made to match the shade and shape of your natural teeth.
Some of the most common uses for crowns include:
- Preserving a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment.
- Hiding discolored or poorly shaped teeth.
- Preventing a weak tooth from breaking.
- Restoring a tooth that has already broken.
- Supporting a filling when a significant portion of the tooth is missing.
- Attaching a bridge.
The way it works … First, we must slightly reduce the size of the tooth, or teeth, for a snug fit. It might sound scary, but it’s actually a painless process. Then we will take an impression to get the perfect mold for your crown. A dental lab will manufacture the crown, it will return to us, and then we’ll be ready to place it. A temporary crown will be used while we wait … since we want to make sure your tooth is safe at all times!
Your crown can last a lifetime! While it’s rare, some crowns loosen or fall out. You can help prevent this by brushing (your teeth and gums!) regularly and flossing.
